Lydia Bittner-Baird is a photographer and former professional dancer who has collaborated on art pieces across the globe. She is an entrepreneurial creative spirit who is passionate about supporting the development of programs and institutions that impact how communities of artists and audiences experience their art form.
Created during her 2016 Project Studio Space at Goodyear Arts, Lydia Bittner-Baird's photographs, I-VI, are linked by their backgrounds, participants, lighting, and activities. They offer glimpses of unusual processes already underway, inviting the viewer to fill in the missing narrative. Bittner-Baird's main inspiration was Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel's book Evidence, which collects archival photographs from industrial labs and government agencies and strips them of all context. She treated these pictures as her own found material and set about recreating the images. She worked variations on the poses, imagined what might have happened next, and over a series of drafts arrived at something entirely new. Companion text by Jeff Jackson.
